This day has been
celebrated since 1977 so as to “raise awareness on how important museums are in
the development of society”. Yesterday one of the news items that hit the
headlines was that the Hispanic Society
of America had won Spain´s Princess of Asturias award for international
cooperation and for its promotion of Hispanic and Latin culture. The Hispanic Society of America consists
of a museum and a library but also an educational organisation and according to
the news reporter, its founder – Archer Milton Huntington – wrote in his journal
that “a museum is such a beautiful place that I would live in one of them”. The Hispanic Society of America was
founded in 1904 by a millionaire who was a lover of Spanish culture but the
museum is free and – like most American museums – it is also a donations-based
museum. This piece of news is not related to films, at least, not directly but
when I think about the relevance of this day, the greatest museums come to mind
and I can´t help recalling the documentary that I watched two years ago: The National Gallery. If you are
interested in documentaries, art or museums, you should have a look at my post Why not watch a documentary? (8th
April 2015) as I feel that learning
about such an important art gallery is a good way of celebrating IMD.
By the way, on IMD most museums
are free so this could be a good opportunity to discover the latest exhibitions
everybody is talking about.
