In search of a safe place

 

One of the films that has been recently released: Death on the Nile, the third film adaptation of Agatha Christie´s novel which has been directed by Kenneth Branagh, who reprises the role of Hercule Poirot as he also played the same role in Murder on the Orient Express in the film adaptation which he directed in 2017. This is the post that I intended to write but last week, last Thursday, one piece of news hit the headlines: Russia had started to invade Ukraine and the threat of war became real. Against the backdrop of a war, speaking and writing about our daily worries may seem tactless or unimportant but when you come to think of it, a sense of comfort and safety – a sense that we find in the shared experience of going to the cinema – is what Ukrainian people need now and it is what all human beings need to lead peaceful lives.

Cate Blanchett: the first International Goya Award

It has recently been announced that the Australian actress, Cate Blanchett, will be presented with the first International Goya award on 12^th February during the 36^th edition of the Goya ceremony, that is, the ceremony of the Spanish film awards. This new accolade is awarded by the Spanish Film Academy as recognition for those “personalities who contribute to the cinema as an art that unites cultures and viewers all over the world”. Cate Blanchett has been chosen for “playing unforgettable roles which are already part of our memory and our present”. The actress is also the recipient of two Oscar awards – one for best actress thanks to her role in Blue Jasmine and another one for best supporting actress in The Aviator, three Golden Globes and three Screen Actors Guild awards so she is one of the few actresses to have won the major film awards. In addition, this year she will receive the honorary César – the lifetime-achievement award – of the French Film Academy on 25^th February.

Apart from her artistic achievements, it is worth mentioning that she is a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN refugee agency and a member of the Australian Conservation Foundation, in other words, Australia´s national environmental organisation.

Cate Blanchett will also be the protagonist of A Manual for Cleaning Women, Pedro Almodóvar´s first film in the English language.

 

Sidney Poitier passes away

 The American actor Sidney Poitier has died today at the age of 94.
